Wholesale-only advice firms: the market the FAR doesn't show you
The ASIC Financial Advisers Register only covers advisers authorised to advise retail clients. Firms whose AFS licence conditions limit them to wholesale clients never appear on it — no adviser records, no practice mapping, nothing.
That gap is large: our mapping of the AFS licensee register and corporate authorised representative register finds 9,000+ wholesale-only firms, spanning:
- Private wealth and family-office advisers serving HNW and ultra-HNW clients
- Fund managers and product issuers — around 2,700 firms operating managed investment schemes
- Corporate advisory, stockbrokers, multi-managers and specialist structurers
Why the wholesale segment matters to distribution
Wholesale advisers write large tickets with less process friction: no Statement of Advice, faster onboarding, and mandates that can move nine figures. For managers of private credit, private equity, hedge and other alternative strategies, the wholesale channel often is the market.
But because these firms are absent from the FAR, most market-intelligence products simply don't cover them. Coverage tends to stop where the retail register stops.
Mapping the invisible
The raw registers give you a licence number, a name and a state — not enough to sell to. Building a usable universe means:
- Classifying each licensee and CAR by what it actually does (HNW adviser vs fund manager vs corporate advisory), from licence conditions and public web presence.
- Verifying websites by matching ABN and AFSL numbers found on the firm's own pages.
- Extracting contactable detail — office phones, shared inboxes, key people — within the bounds of the Spam Act.
ConcaveIQ maintains this wholesale universe weekly alongside the retail register: 9,300+ firms classified, most with verified sites and office contact details, plus 2,400+ funds extracted from managers' own disclosure documents. Explore the coverage.
