Market structure
How many financial advisers are there in Australia?
The ASIC Financial Advisers Register lists roughly 15,000 currently authorised advisers in Australia, spread across about 3,300 advice practices and a much smaller set of licensees. That is the entire addressable retail-advice market for any fund manager, platform or insurer selling through the intermediated channel.
The shape of the market
Three structural features matter more than the headline count:
- Concentration at the top, fragmentation at the bottom. The ten largest advice groups account for a meaningful share of advisers, but the long tail is thousands of one-to-five adviser practices, most self-licensed or under mid-sized AFSLs.
- State skew. NSW and VIC together hold the majority of advisers, but per-capita coverage is strongest in regional hubs where a single practice can dominate a postcode region.
- Licensee churn. Advisers move — between practices, between licensees, and out of the industry. Every move changes who controls the client book and which approved product list applies.
Why the number keeps moving
The register is updated weekly. Adviser numbers fell sharply after the education-standard reforms, then stabilised; the churn now is mostly lateral movement rather than exits. For a BD, the weekly deltas are more useful than the level: a licensee switch is often the moment an adviser re-papers their platform and product relationships.
Counting is the easy part
Any BD team can quote the headline number. The harder questions are the ones that decide a call list:
- How many advisers in your segment — say, HNW-focused practices in NSW with more than five advisers?
- Which practices grew or shrank last quarter?
- Which of the wholesale-only firms — invisible on the FAR — should be on the list too?
